Get ready for some fun when Pembroke and the Downtown Development Authority host the city’s annual 5K/10K and festival on Oct. 25.

Both the 5K run/walk and the 10K race will take the same route through Pembroke, beginning at 8 .m. and ending at Bryan County High School. Costumes are encouraged, but no face masks, please.

Come early, though. There will be a “Monster Mash Dash” for kids 10 and under at 7:30 am.

After the race, the Spooktacular Festival begins at DuBois Square. Activities are from 10 am. Until 2 p.m. and include a carved pumpkin contest sponsored by the North Bryan County Chamber of Commerce, hayrides, hot dogs, a bounce house and balloons for kids, games, face painting and other activities.

Also, there will be crafts, bake sales, H.L. Franklin’s Healthy Honey and Leopold’s Ice Cream.

The city is also hosting its first “Smoketacular Bar-B-Q Cook-off” with the best ribs and Boston Butts announced at 2 p.m. Winners will take home trophies, cash prizes and bragging rights for the best barbecue in Pembroke.

At 6:30 p.m., the city will show “How to Train Your Dragon 2” in DuBoise Square. The movie is free and refreshments will be available for purchase.

Everyone is invited. Proceeds from the run will help provide a walking and fitness trail in the city and proceeds from the festival will help the Downtown Development Authority bring more events to the city.
