A motorcycle rider was seriously injured after he turned in front of an oncoming vehicle Monday afternoon on U.S. 17 near Melody’s Coastal Café.

Lt. Brad Sykes of the Richmond Hill Police Department said the motorcycle rider was northbound on U.S. 17 and was attempting to turn left.

“A vehicle southbound on U.S. 17 was also waiting to turn left and the guy on the motorcycle apparently couldn’t see around it,” Sykes said. “He turned left and was struck by another vehicle traveling southbound on U.S. 17.”

Sykes said the man was thrown from the motorcycle and had visible injuries but was conscious when officers arrived. He was transported to the hospital by ambulance. Sykes said the man was wearing a helmet.

The Richmond Hill Fire Department and Bryan County Emergency Services also were dispatched to the scene. The accident occurred at about 2:45 p.m. and both southbound lanes of U.S. 17 were shut down for about 30 minutes.

Sykes said the names of those involved are not being released as the investigation is ongoing, but he does not anticipate any charges being filed.
