Medal of Honor recipient retired Marine Maj. Gen. James E. Livingston was welcomed by the social-studies department at Richmond Hill Middle School on Monday.
Livingston, one of 78 living Medal of Honor recipients, met with students to talk about his life in the military and his various posts.
A native of Telfair County, according to cmohs.org, Livingston received his honor after his actions during the Vietnam War in May 1968 in Dai Do, Republic of Vietnam. Livingston, then commanding officer of Company E, led his troops in helping driving enemy troops from Dai Do while assisting a Marnie company that had been isolated there. He also guided his company in joining forces with a third company during a battle at the nearby village of Dinh To. Livingston was wounded three times during the events, but refused medical treatment after initially sustaining injuries from grenade fragments and only allowed himself to be evacuated once the safety of his men was assured, according to cmohs.org.
