The 2016 Great Ogeechee Seafood Festival, scheduled to start Thursday in J.F. Gregory Park, is expected to proceed as planned despite damage in the park from Hurrican Matthew.

The group's Facebook page just posted the following message: "At the current time the festival is expected to proceed. The park is in good shape and the forecast for next weekend is awesome! We will be consulting with city and county officials on planning. Our main concern is the safety and health of all residents."

Richmond Hill Mayor Harold Fowler said Saturday that work would begin as soon as possible to remove trees, limbs and other debris from the park.

Bryan County News, media sponsor for the event, will continue to update this information as we find out.
