Highway 144 was closed for more than three hours after a four-vehicle accident near Rabbit Hill Road about 4:15 p.m. Thursday. At least two people were taken to the hospital.

The accident occurred when a westbound vehicle crossed the center line and struck an eastbound vehicle. Bryan County Emergency Services, Bryan County Sheriff’s Office, Richmond Hill Fire Department and Richmond Hill Police Department all responded.

The roadway was closed during one of its busiest times of the day, and traffic was further complicated by those attempting to get to Richmond Hill High School for its homecoming parade.

Traffic on Harris Trail was backed up from Belfast River Road to Port Royal Road as police diverted westbound traffic off Highway 144 down Port Royal.

Georgia State Patrol is conducting the investigation. No further details were available.
