Former Pembroke City Council member Elijah Lewis Jr. was arrested around 4 a.m. March 26 for allegedly driving drunk. This is his fifth arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to a report from the Pembroke Police Department, Sgt. Billy Gray pulled over a gray 1987 Chevrolet Impala, driven by Lewis, who was traveling slowly and crossing the center line of Strickland Street.

After approaching the car, Gray said he detected the smell of alcohol and that Lewis indicated he’d been drinking. Lewis agreed to give a breath sample, but the sergeant said he purposely kept blowing either too hard or not hard enough to get a proper sample.

After failing a field sobriety test, Lewis was taken jail, where he consented to give another breath sample. The first sample showed a blood alcohol content of 0.161 and the second showed 0.169.The legal limit in Georgia is 0.08.

Lewis was elected to the City Council in November 1999 and was unseated in 2007 by Douglas Kangeter.

Lewis’ last DUI arrest was in May 2007, with the other three occurring between 1984 and 2005.
