Deputy dies in off-duty accident

A Bryan County sheriff’s deputy died Saturday after a one-vehicle accident in Bulloch County.

Cpl. Daniel Brackin, 45, died around noon in the off-duty accident. According to the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office, Brackin was on Eldora Road when his Nissan pickup truck drifted over the center line and struck a ditch. Brackin was thrown from the vehicle, which then landed on top of him.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Brackin was a 1992 graduate of Effingham County High School. He previously had worked for the Metter Police Department and Pembroke Police Department.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Flanders Morrison Funeral Home in Pembroke. His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Flanders Morrison, with burial to follow in Eldora Baptist Church Cemetery.

Bryan County Sheriff Clyde Smith did not return phone calls seeking comment on what Brackin meant to his office.
