A North Bryan dirt road formerly known as Georges Branch Road is now officially Staff Sgt Joel Dameron Road after a unanimous decision by the Bryan County Commissioners at Tuesday’s regular meeting.

Dameron was a Marine who joined the U.S. Marine Corps after his graduation from Bryan County High School in 1997. He served for about eight years and became an explosive ordinance disposal technician until he was killed by a road side bomb while on patrol in Iraq in 2005.

Some of Dameron’s family contacted 1st District Commissioner Joe Kendrick in hopes of having the name of the road changed to honor his memory. The road connects Page Road to Jeanette Coursey Road and runs between properties owned by the Page family. Danny Page, a prominent figure in North Bryan County who died in April after a brief illness, was Dameron’s stepfather.
