The Bryan County Board of Education could decide the name of the new elementary school in South Bryan when it meets Thursday in Black Creek.
But it’s still unclear for what, or whom, the new facility will be named.
While the BoE came up with Hardwick, McAllsiter and Keller as potential names — all have local historical significance — Bryan County BoE Chairman Eddie Warren said the board got plenty of feedback from residents through an online survey.
“The response was pretty good,” he said. “We got at least a thousand responses.”
The school board also received several suggestions as to what to name the new school, which will be located near the entrance to DeVaul Henderson Park off Highway 144. Construction is expected to begin before the end of the year.
Among the suggestions is to name the school for the late Capt. Matthew Freeman, a Marine pilot killed in Afghanistan in 2009. Freeman grew up in Richmond Hill and went to local schools before attending the Naval Academy.
