A Friday morning crash involving a tanker truck which rolled down an embankment at the I-95 North exit on Highway 144 has shut that ramp until crews can clean up spilled oil and clear the scene.

The wreck occurred around 8:50 a.m. when the driver of the truck swerved to avoid debris on the interstate, then lost control and came down the embankment, according to Georgia State Patrol Trooper Colin Wheeler. The ramp onto I-95 was still closed two hours later.

The driver was able to get out of the cab on his own, but was transported to Memorial Medical Center by Bryan County Emergency Services. His name was not available, but he is from Brunswick, GSP said.

The tanker was carrying tal oil. Crews from Richmond Hill Fire Department helped environmental clean- up crews keep the oil from getting into storm drains.

Richmond Hill Police Department and Georgia Public Safety officers were also on site.
