Just another day on Highway 80 in Blitchton
Blitchton trucks

Residents of Blitchton have been putting up with 18-wheeler traffic from the Savannah port for years, because truckers leaving the port often take Highway 80 to 280 in order to dodge pay scales on I-16.

As the port has grown, so has the amount of traffic rumbling through the small community, and one traffic study conducted for Bryan County estimated at peak hours there are as many as 300 left turns an hour from 80 onto 280.

Left turns are what many of these trucks are waiting to make at the intersection ahead.

Completion of the $51 million Jimmy Deloach Parkway Extension was supposed to fix that, but somebody apparently forgot to tell the truckers. On any given weekday motorists can still run into what’s shown in the above photo, which was taken around 11:30 a.m. Nov. 3.

A roundabout is reportedly in the works for the interchange, as more development of warehouses and the Hyundai Metaplant America nearby increases traffic in the area.
