The Coastal Georgia Council Boy Scouts of America held their 2018 Friends of Scouting Good Scout Breakfast, May 2, at the Richmond Hill City Center.

The Good Scout Breakfast is held annually in honor of community leaders who have dedicated themselves to youth mentoring and leadership development.

The Council recognized Gary Stanberry with the 2018 Good Scout Award for his outstanding leadership and tireless service to his community.

Stanberry currently serves as the president of the McDonald's Owner Operator Association for Savannah, Albany, Columbus, Augusta and Macon.

Stanberry said scouting had a strong impact on his character and future success.

“I was born and raised in Canton in the mountains of western North Carolina, in Troop 316, which set the foundation for the man I was to become,”  he said.

He and his wife, Jill have been married nearly 30 years and have two sons, James and Justin.

Stanberry began his career at McDonald’s while he was in high school, before attending college at Liberty University. After graduating and working in the family restaurant business, he returned to McDonald’s as assistant manager for the corporation.

For the next 20 years, he held various area and regional managerial positions with McDonald’s Corporation in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

He and his family moved to Savannah in 1995. Today, they own seven McDonald's restaurants in Richmond Hill, Pembroke, Midway, Claxton and Glennville.

The Coastal Georgia Council Boy Scouts of America serves over 5,000 young men and women annually in coastal Georgia through Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturing, Sea Scouts, Scout reach programs and Explorer Post career exploration programs
