Fire destroys home, occupant inside hailed as hero
Jody Price fire

An 80-year-old North Bryan man and his wife lost their home to a fire early Thursday morning, according to Bryan County Fire and Emergency Services.

While a copy of the fire report was not immediately available, the man is being hailed as a hero after he reportedly pulled his wife from the burning home, then drove over five miles to a nearby fire station to alert firefighters.

According to BCFES, when firefighters arrived they found the home was greater than 90-percent involved. Firefighters battled 40 degree temperatures, rain and 20 mph winds as well as terrible road conditions.

“Without fail, our crews along with Pembroke Fire worked tirelessly through the night,” BCFES posted on its Facebook page. “They battled one of the most weather driven fires that flared up every time they put it out. All odds were definitely stacked against them but they did amazing. The home owner was awakened by the smoke alarms. Unable to make it to his wife because of the flames, he went outside and pulled her from an exterior window. This 80 year old is a true hero. He then drove to the fire station approx 5-7 miles away to wake them up because he had no phone. (Hes a Rockstar!) Him and his wife are ok, but their home was a total loss.”

The cause of the fire has not yet been realized. A report was not immediately available.

“Please continue to pray for this family especially as we enter the week of Christmas. Big thanks to from Pembroke Fire for their assistance and Bryan County Road Dept for bringing a backhoe out to assist with the road conditions. At daylight they were plowing the roads!”
