Law enforcement released the name of the man who was struck and killed by a car when he attempted to flee from police during a traffic stop Sunday night: Clarence Johnson.

According to the incident report, at about 11 p.m. on Aug. 26, Liberty County deputies were patrolling Coastal Highway when they called in a request to conduct an insurance and registration check on a vehicle travelling in front of them.

The registration returned to a different vehicle, and the deputies proceeded to initiate a traffic stop. After failing to yield immediately, the driver pulled over at the entrance of Shuman’s Trailer Park.

While being questioned by deputies, Johnson, a passenger in the front seat of the stopped vehicle, was suspected of having a narcotic substance on his person, according to the incident report.

When Johnson was then asked to step out of the vehicle, deputies reported, he attempted to flee and was struck by oncoming traffic. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle Johnson was travelling in was cited for traffic violations. The driver who struck Johnson was taken to Winn Army Community Hospital.

Law enforcement was unable to recover any drugs from the scene
