The Coastal Health District reported Friday that a Chatham County resident has tested positive for COVID-19.

"The individual is currently isolated at home, and the source of the exposure is unknown. Coastal Health District

epidemiologists are gathering more information which can be used to notify others who may have had

close contact with the individual," CHD said in a press release. "This is the fourth confirmed case of COVID-19 in the Coastal Health

District; there are 2 in Glynn County residents, 1 in an Effingham County resident, and 1 in Chatham County. The Coastal Health District includes Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long and McIntosh counties."

The CHD said it does not yet have the capacity for widespread community testing for the virus. So far, there have been 420 confirmed cases of COVID-19, or the coronavirus, in Georgia. There have been 13 deaths as a result of the virus, Department of Public Health Officials say. 

"Fortunately, most people who are mildly or moderately ill can safely recover at home while self-isolating and treating symptons," the CHD said. 

Testing is being prioritized at the moment, with priorities going to those 60 or older, those with chronic health conditions, those residing in long term care facilities such as assisted living or nursing homes; and public health and safety workers.

The CHD follows state and federal guidelines in recommending "social distancing."

"The less contact people have with one another means the less opportunity for the virus to spread," the CHD press release said. "Slowing the spread of the virus means we can keep our healthcare system from becoming overwhelmed."
