Eager to return to his love of reporting, longtime Morris Multimedia/Morris Technology employee Mark Swendra has joined the Coastal Courier and Bryan County News as staff writer.

Since 2006, Swendra, as corporate new media director for Morris, helped newspapers such as the Courier and BC News create web and multimedia content, trained employees on new technologies, and helped initiate strategies for online revenue.

Prior, he held various positions at the Savannah Morning News, both in the newsroom and online. He and his wife Tarin have lived in the area since 1993.

Recently, Swendra decided to "semi-retire" and seek a lifestyle that afforded him the opportunity to work part-time and volunteer a couple of days a week at Compassion Christian Church in Savannah.

"I loved my previous job at corporate, but as I was reaching a certain age, I reflected on how best to spend my day," Swendra said. "My happiest memories are from my first years in newspapers when I was a reporter," he added. "I love getting out and meeting new people, and telling their stories. Today, more than ever, we can tell that story in so many interesting ways, whether it is through video, web, print or social media."
