Bryan County Schools reverses decision to opt out of homestead exemption
bc schools

At Thursday's School Board Meeting hosted in Pembroke, Bryan County Schools has officially rescinded approval of the resolution to opt out of the Homestead Exemption Act. The vote was unanimous.

This move is in response to Gov. Brian Kemp's passage of HB 92 on April 1, 2025, which allows for school districts who opt in to HB 581 to receive a sales tax exemption for qualifying construction materials used in capital projects for educational purposes.

In a press release, Bryan County Schools described the new legislation as a "win-win" for both Bryan County residents and Bryan County Schools.

"With more than $300 million in building and construction needs over the next decade, we have considered the impact and studied the opportunity to have building materials exempted from sales tax. The potential savings of millions of dollars in a sales tax exemption will help offset some of the revenue losses from opting in to HB 581," the release said.
