Who says there’s no good news anymore?

The Bryan County Board of Education met Thursday evening in the media center of Bryan County High School and top of the agenda were numerous recognitions for achievements of the students and a teacher.

Dr. Sallie Brewer, superintendent of schools and Bryan County High School Principal Harold Roach did the honors: Jessica Norfleet - Honorable Mention, Pembroke Telephone art contest

Jackie Williams - First Runner Up, Pembroke Telephone art contest

Christina Anderson - Second Runner Up, Pembroke Telephone art contest

Kurt Shuman - First Prize, Pembroke Telephone art contest

Ivy Mutcherson, Senior Running Back - WTOC Super 11 Pre-Season All-Star Football Team member for 2008 football season

Tosca, Sasha and Amber Morgan - WTOC Top Teens for Excellent academic and community work

Lauren Hodges - area media, outstanding teen, featured for Academic, community and extracurricular activities

Tiffany Howard - Bryan County Athlete of the Month for September Bryan County News

Joey Bacon - Two perfect scores on the Math and English portions of the Georgia High School Graduation Test for 2008 - "He is the first that we know of to receive two perfect scores on the grad test," Roach said.

Teacher Cindy Bennett - WTOC Top Teacher award.

Bryan County High School band, under the direction of their new Band Director, Dr. William Denton, competed for the first time at the Coastal Empire Classic and received marks of Excellence in the categories of Band, Drum Major, percussion and Color Guard Flag Corps.

Holly Myers is Flag and Dance Sponsor and Britany Shuman is Drum Major.

Other members are Sarah De Torres, Amanda Ruff, Nicholas Lancaster, Haley Clayton, Josh Adams, Dylan Kohler, Kevin Kilmer, Hunter Smith, Tyler Mikel and Aaron Bashlor.

Percussions are Josh McPherson, Jerry Shuman, Jessica Norfleet, John Kuntz and Mathew Singleton.

Flags are Captain Amanda Herndon, Co-captain Katie Smith, Amy Walker and Taylor Bunton.

Dance team is Captain Megan Craig, Co-captain Shaunequia Moore, Megan Geiger, Crystal Howard, Heather Etheridge and Michelle Mitchler.

WTOC Top Teacher Cindy Bennett was recognized with Principal Roach noting that the honor was particularly special because her students nominated her, which he felt said a lot about how well she works with her students for them to have nominated her.

Associate Superintendent John Oliver said current total enrollment in the schools, countywide stand at 6,793 with a projected 10,000 to be enrolled by the year 2018.

He said there are currently 1,805 students in north Bryan County and 4,988 in south Bryan.
