It’s not every day someone turns 106.

It happened Saturday in Pembroke, as Altie Moody celebrated her birthday with family and friends at the Bryan County Senior Center. Moody is believed to be Bryan County’s oldest resident, and one of the oldest in the state.

Among those to salute Ms. Altie Saturday were Pembroke Mayor Pro Tem Johnny Miller, Pembroke Public Safety Director Bill Collins, Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church Pastor James Howard, family members such as Moody’s son, Daniel, who is 83, and longtime friends such as Rose Mock, who said “Miss Altie is a true Southern lady. She’s a proud person who’s tried to do the right thing all her life, and she’s done a very good job of that. We all should be more like her.”
