'Alivea's Dream' book drive going strong

More than 3,000 books that were donated by the community as part of the "Keeping Alivea's Dream Alive" book drive, have been sorted by volunteers and transported to a storage facility.

Volunteers, young and old, continue to donate their time (often in the blazing heat) to take part in the process of gathering, sorting and delivering the books, that will eventually be sent to children in Ukraine orphanages and schools.

The book drive is in memory of Alivea Cox, the 14-year-old Richmond Hill student, who died earlier in the month of cancer, and whose dream was to organize a book drive for those children.

As the community continues to donate the new and slightly-used books to approximately 30 drop-off locations (see list below), groups, such as the Richmond Hill High School Beta Club, gathered at Daniel Baptist Church late last week to assist.

Among those helping out were Bryce Gros, Corey Adamski, Katie Bacon,  Coleman Tate, Ava Bowling, Civility Bowling, Sarah Quayle, Alison Carter Frost, Janie Carter, and Sandi Rushing Lowe, according to organizer Beth Odom.

The book drive is ongoing, and local schools say they will participate when the fall school session begins. In the meantime, a "Keeping Alivea's Dream Alive" booth will accept donations at the Richmond Hill Independence Day celebration on June 30 at J.F. Gregory Park.
