African Americans from the Gullah-Geechee culture became the first “oyster men” on the Georgia coast by the 19th century, but companies, often owned by European immigrants, later moved in for processing and canning oysters, researcher Ingram informed the Bulloch County Historical Society.

Changes to US 280 and I-16 begin Friday

Weather permitting, Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) contractors will be shifting traffic into a temporary configuration on US 280/State Route (SR) 30 at the I-16 westbound roundabout. This will occur Friday, June 20, through Saturday, June 21, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.
