Birdell Hallman, whose home is in the Mulberry Subdivision, is the winner of the April, 2023, Yard of the Month award by the Richmond Hill Garden Club.
According to the club, Hallman's story is as interesting as her yard.
Hallman's family moved to Richmond Hill in 1940, when she was two. She spent her childhood living on Belfast Keller Road, when there were less than 10 houses on the entire road. Pavement on Highway 144 stopped at the second railroad track. Her father was employed by Henry Ford for many years.
Today, Hallman's immaculate yard is anchored by two palm trees that she planted 24 years ago. Not only did she plant the two palms and a big oak tree, she also maintains her yard, by herself, at the age of 84.
This includes mowing, edging, trimming and putting down pine straw. Her yard is a haven of neatly trimmed beds filled with colorful day lilies, lantana, sego palms and gerbera daisies. Her backyard overlooks a beautiful lagoon.
Hallman said to the Garden Club, "My yard is what keeps me going!"
