Fairy tales may say stepparents are evil, but this blended family is moved to tears as parents thank stepparents for their positive role in a childs life. - photo by Martha Ostergar
HOME SWEET HOME What do you think of when you hear the term stepparent?

That word may conjure up images of an evil stepmother of fairy tale fame all the way up the scale to the saccharine sweetness of Mike and Carol Brady.

Neither of those extremes feel like a reality, so the reality must certainly reside somewhere in between. But my experience in this realm is limited, so my expertise is nonexistent. However, I do have expertise in being touched by this video about the role of two stepparents in a childs life, brought to us from feel-good YouTube channel SoulPancake.

Perhaps to show functioning families come in many shapes and sizes, or perhaps to simply give credit where credit is due, SoulPancake asked the parents in a blended family to express their feelings toward the stepmother and stepfather of their son, Nakh.

In the video, Nakhs father, Jamey, and mother, Tara, talk about the painful breakup of their marriage and the feelings they had when both Jamey and Tara remarried, bringing a stepfather and stepmother into Nakhs life.

It obviously wasnt an easy journey for their now-blended families, which makes what comes next in the video remarkable and touching. Both Jamey and Tara have unflinching gratitude and love toward these new parental figures in Nakhs life, which Jamey and Tara each eloquently express in letters to Nakhs stepfather and stepmother, respectively.

Further explanation will only get more convoluted, but all is made crystal clear in the video. Sure, its over six minutes long, but its also almost guaranteed to make your day a little brighter and more hopeful, even if you shed a few tears like I did.
