ART CLASS No matter how old you get, there will always be something special about a fresh box of Crayola crayons.
Maybe its because it reminds us of going school supply shopping with our parents, picking out a new backpack and pencil case in the hope that third grade will be our favorite year of school yet. Maybe its because a freshly opened box has a distinct clean, waxy smell. Maybe its because we couldnt wait to read all of the fun colors on the fibrous paper wrapping, like cornflower blue, razzmatazz and macaroni and cheese.
Or maybe its because a box of crayons is a physical representation of creative possibility.
YouTuber Peter Brown tested that theory literally when he took a collection of Crayola crayons and melted them together into a block so he could turn it into something else: a darling rainbow bud vase.
The 256 crayons were melted into a block that he then turned on a wood lathe, not using any glue or additional product to fuse it.
The video is fascinating, and theres some strange satisfaction in watching multicolored wax bits flying all over the workshop. Theres so much joy in crayons, regardless of how theyre repurposed.
