After their 3-month-old daughter was diagnosed with an incurable and rare condition, called spinal muscular atrophy, the Cory Mars family in Wisconsin decided to create a bucket list for their daughter, Fox News reported. Shes been visited by Santa Claus, and her father already walked her down the aisle.

Were making the best of the situation as possible and making her as comfortable as possible, Cory Mars told WBAY-TV 2.

Similarly, the Garrett Gee family in Utah decided to give up everything they had and start a bucket list, which will allow them to see and do everything theyve always wanted to do as a family, according to KUTV.

Garrett Gee sold his startup to Snapchat, giving him enough financial resources to care for his family while also traveling the world, KUTV reported.

"We just kind of realized that there's a lot of opportunities in the world and so it kind of became a game of just going for the adventure," he told KUTV.

Bucket lists have risen in popularity since the Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman film by that title came out in 2007.

Most bucket lists are written by older adults, who want to accomplish their dreams before they run out of time, according to the Wall Street Journal. Experts agree that bucket lists allow Americans to get a new take on life, which make them mentally healthier, as long as they act on those dreams.

"Fortunately for many 50- and 60-somethings today, we can do more than leave a legacywe can actually live one," Marc Freedman, the CEO and founder of a nonprofit organization helping older Americans find encore careers, told WSJ.

Many Americans will use their bucket list to visit places theyd never been to, try new restaurants or achieve some career goals, according to CBS.

Others, though, will use it as a chance to do some random fun things you'd like to do with your family, like going disco roller skating or ice fishing, according to CBS.

In fact, CBS Laura Vanderkam created a bucket list that included some family activities, like going out to dinner with her husband twice a month, running races with her children and singing in a choir together, among other family activities.

Creating a bucket list with your family is as simple as making a list of goals for the year both big and small, like a vacation and a restaurant to eat at, according to Psychology Today.

Its also important to plan out a bucket list carefully with the right activities, according to Psychology Today. And its suggested people map out their finances so they can afford all the items on the list.
