Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps opened up this week in an interview with The Daily Beast about his role as a father, his life in retirement and how hes worked to help athletes with substance abuse.

Here are three highlights from the interview:

  • Phelps, who retired from swimming after the 2016 Rio Olympics, said hes worked to promote sustainability in water use. Obviously its different when I was living the bachelor life, but now Nicole (Phelps) and I are raising a family together, and trying to teach them some of the small things that can change the world not just with water, but with trying to destigmatize mental health, too, he told The Daily Beast.

  • Phelps also recounted his experience at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, where a lone gunman killed 58 people and injured 500. He attended the show with his wife on Friday night, two nights before the shooting.

  • Phelps said hes also provided counseling for athletes struggling with substance abuse, like Tiger Woods. I have no problems just being me, opening up about the experiences Ive had, and giving my two cents if I can. I want to help as many people as I can, he said.
