Whitewater trip set for July

Have fun kayaking, whitewater rafting, ziplining, canoeing and more on a Leisure Travel trip to the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte, N.C., on July 18.

That evening, the musical group “This Mountain” will perform as part of the River Jam concert series. Then travelers will check into a hotel for the night.

The cost is $175 per person, based on two people per room. Cost for third and fourth person is $60 each. Price includes transportation, passes to the center, concert, hotel and breakfast.

Junior golf camp

Junior Golf Camp at Taylors Creek Golf Course will be June 15-19 and July 13-17 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. It is for ages 6-12 and covers putting, approach shots, rules and etiquette. No previous experience is necessary.

Bring your equipment; however clubs will be provided for those who do not have their own. The fee of $150 includes instruction, booklets, golf cap, balls and tees. A tournament, with lunch provided, will be held on the final day.

Outdoor movies

“Maleficent,” rated PG, is the next film in the Holbrook Movies Under the Stars series. It will be shown starting at 8:30 p.m. on June 19.

There’s no charge. Movie-goers are asked to bring chairs or blankets. Popcorn and drinks will be sold.

July 17: “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” PG-13 (101 minutes).

Aug. 22: “How to train your Dragon 2,” PG, (102 minutes).

Sept. 11: “Guardians of the Galaxy,” PG-13, (121 minutes).

Oct. 24: “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” PG (25 minutes) and “Hocus Pocus,” PG, (96 minutes).

Brews and BBQ

Enjoy beer and plenty of barbeque while at the Low Country Brews and BBQ Bites 6-8 p.m. June 19 on the lawn (Hero Road side) at Club Stewart. Don’t miss this upscale BBQ, paired with Service Brewing's craft beers. The evening will feature four interactive stations. 

On the menu is Ground Pounder beer can chicken and Yukon gold fries; Old Guard and honey lacquered pork loin with jalapeno bacon mac and cheese; Compass Rose brined and house-smoked beef tri-tip mini subs with assorted toppings, plus an interactive dessert station.

Cost is $25 per person. To host the event, the club must pre-sell 70 tickets. Buy them at the club by June 17. Refunds will be issued if event is cancelled. For more information, call 767-4717.

 

Golf scramble

Start your weekend with golf with friends or family in the Summer Golf Scramble at Taylors Creek Golf Course June 20. Shotgun start in the four-person format is at 9 a.m., registration starting at 8 a.m. The cost of $35 includes greens fee and golf cart. For more information, call 767-2370.

 

Garage sale on Hunter

An on-post housing garage sale on Hunter will be from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. June 20.

On-post residents are eligible to sell and must register by June 12 to have their sale placed on a map which will be posted at www.huntermwr.com.

Military and civilians are invited to shop. Gate passes for civilians may be obtained two days in advance from Montgomery Street Gate.

Parent/child foot golf

Hunter Golf Course invites parents to bring their children to a new form of golf starting at 1 p.m. June 27. The 18-hole foot course is adjacent to the front nine of the standard course. Rules are similar to traditional golf, but players use a soccer ball. There will be two team divisions along with parent (ages 7-12 and ages 13-17). Players are asked to register by June 26. Offshore fishing

Register by June 19 for a day of offshore deep sea fishing, where black sea bass and trigger fish are the catch of the day. Sail out of Jekyll Island Marina on June 27.

The cost of $135 per person includes bait, tackle and transportation. Participants must be 12 or older. Bring your lunch coolers, up to 48 quarts allowed, no glass. Keep what you catch if in season (limits set by Fish and Wildlife).

Flip Flop Day

Celebrate National Flip Flop Day from 3-8 p.m. June 19 at Corkan Family Fun Center, with a deal on roller skating when you check in wearing flip flops. Don’t forget your socks. Skate for $3 per person. For more information, call 767-4273.

 

Walking Dead tour

Register by June 22 to take “The Walking Dead” tour in Atlanta July 11. Visit the hospital where it all started. Go inside the goat farm and see firsthand where the "Vatis" camped. Find out if the CDC is still standing and get your selfie from the Jackson Street Bridge.

Pool work set

Installation of energy saving, retractable thermal pool covers will temporarily close Hunter/Stewart’s indoor pools. Scheduled dates for closing are: Johnson Fitness Center, July 6-13; Newman Fitness Center Pool, July 14-19, and Tominac Fitness Center, July 20-24.
