The research schooner Tara will make a port call Jan. 20-26 as part of the Tara Oceans project.
Tara Oceans is the first attempt to make a global study of marine plankton. Marine plankton is the only ecosystem that is almost continuous over Earth’s surface. Recently, scientists have discovered the great importance of plankton for the climate. Populations of plankton are affected rapidly by variations in climate. In turn, plankton can influence the climate by modifying the absorption of carbon. Tara provides samples and data to the world’s scientific community to learn more about the impact of climate change on ecosystems.
Events planned for the six-day port call include:
• Friday: A flotilla of local vessels will accompany Tara into port.
• During the weekend, the ship’s crew will engage the public dockside about their programs and projects.
• Monday through Wednesday, the ship’s crew will welcome students from area schools aboard.
• A series of scientific seminars at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography and Savannah State University.
