Golden Isles Arts & Humanities will offer a theatrical presentation for The Big Read 2013, a production of Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, “Our Town.” The show will run Feb. 22-through March 3 at the Historic Ritz Theatre in downtown Brunswick. It features a cast of local actors.
First produced in 1938, “Our Town” centers on the lives of the people of a small American town. The play presents a commentary on the transience of human existence. Young adults Emily and George meet, fall in love, marry and face the joys and hardships of life. The plot explores mortality and the interconnectivity of humans.
The production is part of several weeks of activities for The Big Read 2013. Other events include “Coastal Georgia Reads Thornton Wilder,” a community-wide literary reading initiative that offers films, exhibits, talks and discussion groups; school programs; and special events celebrating Wilder’s 1927 novel, “The Bridge of San Luis Rey.”
The Big Read is a National Endowment for the Arts program created in partnership with Arts Midwest to encourage reading by focusing entire communities on a single book or author.
“Our Town” begins at 8 p.m. Friday-Saturday, Feb. 22-23; Thursday, Feb. 28, and Saturday, March 2. The show is at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24 and Sunday, March 3. There is no Friday, March 1 performance. Tickets cost between $5 and $25, depending on age, member status and purchase date.
