I’m not only your personal film critic, but I’m also a crazy fan of “The Hunger Games.” Find out what all the fuss is all about concerning the blockbuster film.
According to the official synopsis from the film’s studio, Lion’s Gate, “Hunger Games” centers on the nation of Panem, which is on the post-apocalyptic continent that was North America. Panem consists of 12 districts. Each year, a lottery is held to send teenage boys and girls from the districts to compete in the televised Hunger Games, during which the teens, or “Tributes,” fight each other until one survivor is left.
One of the competitors is Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence), who, according to IMDB.com, volunteers to take the place of her younger sister, Primrose (Willow Shields), in the games. Katniss is pitted against highly trained Tributes called “Careers” and tries to survive.
Now onto some questions those who have seen the film may have:
Q: What’s with the weird names?
A: Well, katniss and primrose are flowers. Katniss’ mother (Paula Malcolmson), who passes for the town nurse, knows which herbs have healing powers. When you hear Gale (Liam Hemsworth) call Katniss “katnip,” he’s just teasing her.
Q: What is the three-finger salute?
A: The silent salute is a special, rarely used gesture that denotes intense admiration or thanks or is used to say goodbye to a loved one.
Q: Why is Gale’s name in the lottery 42 times?
A: You can trade food for having your name placed in more times.
This adaptation is one of the closest to the original book that I have ever seen. The casting is amazing. I especially was thrilled by the performances of Woody Harrelson as Haymitch and Lenny Kravitz as Cinna, Katniss’ stylist.
Everything was perfect and … I’m a fan.
