Five for Families: McFarland a must-see family film

Here are five movies from various platforms families may want to consider. Note: Since not all are appropriate for younger children, age recommendations are included.

In theaters: 'McFarland, USA'

The Dove Foundation refers to McFarland, USA as a must-see film full of laugh-out-loud moments, stating, McFarland USA is the perfect family movie! It is a remarkable film based on a true story and combines drama and humor to present a coach and his athletes as underdogs who work hard and learn to believe in themselves. The results are pretty spectacular. The film is rated PG for thematic material, some violence and language. Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 10 and older.

Redbox: 'Big Hero 6'

Parents Television Council said Big Hero 6 is a delightful animated movie perfect for families and kids, packed with excitement, action and humor, but also with genuine emotion, character growth, heart and morality. The film recently won Best Animated Feature Film at the 2015 Academy Awards. Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 6 and older.

Netflix: 'Earth to Echo'

Catholic News Services John Mulderig said while originality is not the main selling point for Earth to Echo, it does contain positive lessons about loyalty and trust. Mulderig referred to the film as a mix of old favorites such as The Goonies and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 9 and older.

Amazon Instant: 'The Sound of Music'

Common Sense Media said this classic film is rich in character, music and story, as well as filled with positive messages. The website warns that the final minutes of the film contain a number of suspenseful scenes that may be frightening for some children. Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 5 and older.

Netflix: 'Mulan'

MovieGuide.org refers to Mulan as a visually striking, funny, exciting and very moving film, stating that it clearly has a strong moral worldview that upholds the importance of family, courage, self-sacrifice, responsibility, honor, freedom and country. Ok.com recommends the film for viewers ages 4 and older.
