Deadline for post-wide yard sale is Friday

On-post housing residents who want participate in Post-Wide Housing Garage Sales on Stewart and Hunter on April 21 are asked to register by Friday so their sale location can be noted on a map. It's free to register. To sign up, or to learn more about the sales, call 767-8238 at Stewart or 315-2019 at Hunter

Everyone (military and non-military) is invited to the sales, scheduled from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. on April 21. Only residents of post housing are eligible to sell.

There will be no sales at the Club Stewart or the Credit Union parking lot at Hunter this year.

 

Catch-and-release Bass Tournament

A catch-and-release Bass Tournament will be Saturday at Metz Pond on Fort Stewart. All are invited.

Fishermen may launch at first light (about 6:30 a.m.) and present fish for weigh-in at 11 a.m. Cash prizes, based on the number of participants, will be awarded for first through fifth places, largest fish and youth category.

Winners will be determined by total weight of five fish.

Registration through Friday costs $20 for soldiers, retirees, family members and youth 16 and younger. The fee is $35 for civilians

Register at the Stewart and Hunter Pass and Permit offices. The Stewart office phone number is 435-8061. The Hunter office's number is 315-5163.

Registering in Saturday costs $30 for soldiers, retirees, family members and youth; and $40 for civilians. 

Boat rentals will be available at Holbrook Equipment Rental Center to valid ID cardholders. Renters must present a boater safety card, available free through www.boatus.com.

 

Teen High Adventure Camp Sign-up

Registration will close June 7 for an action-filled Teen High Adventure Camp June 17-22 in the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina.

The annual trip is sponsored by the Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield Child, Youth and School Services and is open to CYSS-registered youth, 13-17.

The camp is one of the best for teens in the Army. Youth can learn lifetime outdoor adventure skills through an array of activities including two white-water rafting trips, tubing, zip-lining and hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

Family style meals, cabins and activity fees are included in the$150 registration.

Register in person through Stewart/Hunter CYSS Parent Central Services. No refunds will be granted after June 7. For more information, call the School Liaison Office at 767-6533 or 315-6586.

 

Spring Education Forum at Stewart 

A Spring Education Forum, during which soldiers, family members and educators can discuss issues and solutions relevant to military-connected students, will be from 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. April 18 in the Club Stewart Ballroom.

The forum focuses on students enrolled in public and DoDEA schools. 

Parents are needed to discuss issues and possible solutions in discussion groups. Those interested in being delegates should contact the School Liaison Office at 767-6533.

Scream ‘N' Shout coming to Stewart/Hunter

Scream 'N' Shout “Kidz With Character,” the fastest growing elementary school assembly in the country, is coming to Stewart's Newman Fitness Center at 6 p.m. April 19 and to Hunter's Tominac Fitness Center at 6 p.m. April 20.

The show incorporates music, movement, magic and fun to motivate and inspire children 5-12 to become respectful, reliable, trustworthy, responsible and caring.

The cost is $5 per family. Tickets are available at the Stewart/Hunter Leisure Travel offices or at the door. At Stewart, Leisure Travel is in the PX Furniture Mall Complex and the telephone number is 767-2841. At Hunter, Leisure Travel is in the Soldier Services Center, phone 315-3674.

Skidaway Aquarium, boat ride

CYSS-registered youth in grades 5-12 can learn about marine wildlife indigenous to the area and take a boat ride through Intercoastal Waterway with Youth Sponsorship’s UGA Aquarium/Skidaway Island Boat Ride on April 21.

There is no charge. The trip is an opportunity for youth new to the area to make friends while learning about the area. Youth are asked to bring $3 for admission to the Aquarium. Registration continues until April 19.

Riverboat dinner cruise

Register by May 1 for a Leisure Travel trip back into Civil War Era Savannah.

On a two-hour cruise along the Savannah River starting at 6 p.m. May 3, you’ll experience a performance, story-telling, dance and music presented by the Gullah Geechee Institute. Enjoy an authentic, Southern, Civil War era buffet. The cost is $57 for adults and $37 for children.

Operation Purple Camps registration

Applications for Operation Purple Camps are available through the National Military Family Association NMFA website.

The program gives military children, ages 7-17, the tools to deal with the stresses that result from a parent's deployment. Priority will be given to children whose parents are deployed between Sept. 11 and Dec. 12 and who have not been to one of the camps.

According to the NMFA website, OPC camps are “a time for having fun, making friends, and reminding military kids that they are the nation's youngest heroes.” The camps are held during the summer.

 

Group fitness classes

Sign up now for group fitness classes at Newman Fitness Center. Classes offered include kickboxing, steps, zumba, spinning, extreme, abs and water fitness, all tailored to suit various fitness levels and needs. Child care is offered through CYSS Kids on Site.

Classes require a $3 fee, with the exception of pilates, which costs $10 per class or $45 monthly. Ask about a $25 pass for admission to 10 classes.

Stewart Lanes’ Quarter Bowlerama

Bowlers, check out the Quarter Bowlerama from 5-9 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at Stewart Lanes. Pay a $5 cover charge and play for only 25 cents per game. For more information, call 767-4273.

 

50-bird skeet shoot

A quarterly, 50-bird skeet shoot will be held May 19 at the Hunter Skeet Range. The range is off South Perimeter Road.

Prizes, giveaways and food are included in the $25 entry fee. The cost is $40 for skeet and trap (100-bird total).

Depending on the number of entries, competition is scheduled in novice, intermediate, expert, youth and ladies categories.

A $200 prize will be awarded for a perfect round.

The registration deadline is May 17. Sign up at the range. Registration costs for the first 15 soldiers who sign up will be paid by Mossy Oaks Gun Club.

Shotguns for those who do not have one will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Available are .12 and .20 gauge and youth .20 gauge.
