Weekly FMWR briefing for Feb. 20

Community Showcase/Travel Shows are scheduled from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Hunter Club on March 12, and from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. March 13 at Club Stewart.
The shows let soldiers and families learn about travel, education and recreation in the area.
While the travel show features activities like tours, resorts and travel tips, the showcase also will include information about what is available in communities throughout Georgia, South Carolina and Florida.
Booths will be staffed by chambers of commerce, visitors bureaus, art clubs, cultural resources, health care and support groups.
In addition to the information available, there will be door prizes and giveaways. There is no charge and the shows are open to all.

Play golf with the pros
Soldiers based on Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield are invited to compete in a qualifying tournament at 1 p.m. Saturday on the Hunter Army Airfield Golf Course to be select a representative Fort Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield for pro-am rounds for the Heritage Classic on Hilton Head Island's Harbour Town Golf Links on April 9 (two slots) and the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament on Savannah's Westin at Savannah Harbor Golf Resort on April 18-19.
Heritage Classic: One of golf's greatest traditions, the Heritage has drawn some of the greatest names in golf; Nicklaus, Palmer, Tiger, and Greg Norman. Today's top golfers are still being challenged by the fairways of the Harbour Town Golf Links.
Liberty Mutual Legends includes the stars on the Legends Tour, including Tom Kite, Gil Morgan, Tom Lehman, Dave Stockton, and Tom Watson. The best six amateur golfers will be selected with consideration given to wounded warriors. Register by calling the Hunter Golf Course at 315-5910 no later than Feb 23. Regular fees will be charged.

Youth Facebook meeting March 1
A Youth Action Council Facebook meeting is scheduled from 5-6 p.m. on March 1.
The meeting provides youth with opportunities to discuss the quality of life for youth on Fort Stewart. It is open to military connected teens of parents stationed at Fort Stewart.

Shamrock Run at Hunter
Wear a little bit of green - or a lot if you like - and enjoy a morning of family fun at the Shamrock Run at 10 a.m. on March 3 at Hunter.
Participants may run or walk either a 5K or 1.5-mile course, with a starting point on Perimeter Road.
Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. T-shirts and awards will be presented after the race.

Free afternoon movie for kids
Children up to the age of 12 will enjoy a free movie from 4-5 p.m. March 7 in the children's room at George P. Hays Library. For more information, call 767-2828.

Youth wildlife refuge/Tara Feis trip
CYSS-registered youth in grades 5-12 can learn about the culture of Ireland and see gators and other wildlife during a Youth Sponsorship's Savannah Wildlife Refuge/Tara Feis trip on March 10.
There is no charge. It's an opportunity for youth new to Fort Stewart/ Hunter to make new friends, while learning about the area. Registration will close March 8.

Tell Me a Story reader
Third Infantry Division Command Sgt. Maj. Edd Watson will be the featured reader at Tell Me a Story from 3-4 p.m. March 11 at First Brigade Headquarters conference room. The headquarters is on Gulick Avenue.
The featured book will be "Giraffes Can't Dance" by Giles Andreae. The story celebrates the differences in all of us.
There is no charge, but space is limited and those planning to attend are encouraged to register early by calling Jacqui Coffman at 408-0008 or by e-mail at PtoP.Stewart@militarychild.org.
The event, sponsored by the Military Child Education Coalition in conjunction with the Child, Youth & School Services, is geared for children ages 4-12. Hands-on activities, snacks, and a fun learning experience will be provided.

Girl Scout Day at Stewart Lanes
The founding of Girl Scouts by Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low on March 12, 1912, in Savannah will be celebrated from 4-6 p.m. March 12 at Stewart Lanes Bowling Center. All Girl Scouts in uniform can bowl one free game.

Catch-and-release Bass Tournament March 17
A catch-and-release Bass Tournament will be March 17 at Pond 1, Pineview Lake on Fort Stewart. All are invited to participate.
Fishermen may launch at first light (about 6:30 a.m.) and present their catch for the weigh-in at 11 a.m. Cash prizes, based on the number of participants, will be awarded for first through fifth places, largest fish, and youth category.
Winners will be determined by total weight of a five-fish maximum.
Early bird registration continues through March 8. The cost is $15 for soldiers, retirees, family members and all youth 16 and younger. The early bird fee is $30 for all civilians. An additional $5 charge will be added for registration March 9-16. On the day of the tourney, another $5 will also be added.
Register at the Stewart and Hunter Pass and Permit Offices. The Stewart office's number is 435-8061. The Hunter office's number is 315-5163.
Boat rentals will be available at Holbrook Equipment Rental Center to valid ID cardholders. Renters must present a boater safety card, available free through www.boatus.com.

Corkan's "2-4-20 Deal"
Here's a deal you won't want to pass up at the Corkan Family Fun Center on Fridays from 3 to 9 p.m. $20 covers two roller skating admissions, two skate rentals, a pitcher of soda and a 12-inch, two-topping pizza.

Internationally food in Palmetto Room
Thunder Run's internationally inspired cuisine night is now being served in the Palmetto Room every Wednesday from 5-8 p.m., due to renovation of Club Stewart.
The menu features a different taste every week from Italian, Latin, German to American cuisine. The cost is $9.95 for adults, half price for children ages 5-10 and free for children ages 4 and under. For more information, call 368-2212.
