Blues and BBQ this weekend
Weekly FMWR briefing for Sept. 24-30

Downtown Hinesville will be filled with music and barbecue from 4-11 p.m. Saturday for the annual Blues & BBQ behind the new judicial center on Main Street.

Feature musicians will be Jimmy Wayne Renfro, Everready and headliner Joey Gilmore.

In addition to great blues, the family-oriented festival will include a barbecue and sweet tea contests, sidewalk chalk art contest, beer tasting and vendors.

The Hinesville Arts Council, Fort Stewart’s Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, and the Downtown Development Authority are organizing it.

Family night at Stewart Lanes

Bring the family to Stewart Lanes for dinner and bowling at a special price from 4-8 p.m. Sunday. The cost is $30 for a family of five. Featured this month is a 16-inch pizza with one topping, plus a side salad and refillable soda.

Sixth Sense Tour

Register by Oct. 1 to join Leisure Travel on Oct. 6 for a Sixth Sense Tour in Savannah. This is a couples and adults only trip.

Wild hog competition

Registration is open until Oct. 5 for the 2012 Wild Hog Competition that continues through Dec. 31.

Register at the Pass & Permit Offices on Stewart or Hunter. All participants must be hold valid permits. There is a $5 entry fee.

Judging will be based on the number of hogs harvested during unmanaged hunts and all hogs must be submitted to the Pass & Permit office or at the fish and wildlife office on Fort Stewart.

Columbus Day at Corkan

All Corkan Family Fun Centers will be open from 11:30 a.m.-7 p.m. on Columbus Day, Oct. 8. Patrons are reminded that there will be no Toddler Time at Cypress Sam’s Treehouse on that day.

Managed deer hunts

Registration is under way for managed deer hunts led by FMWR’s Outdoor Recreation division.  

Applications will be taken at Pass & Permit Offices on Fort Stewart and Hunter. The hunts are for active duty and retirees.

Fifty slots are available for each hunt.

The first hunt will be on Oct. 20 in Training Area Delta. Register by 5 p.m. Oct. 8. The second hunt will on Nov. 17 in the Red Cloud Area. Register by 5 p.m. Nov. 5.

Participants will be selected by lottery.

There will be both morning and afternoon hunts, with lunch provided during the break. Game check and cleaning stations will be provided by Fish and Wildlife. A $10 per-hunter fee will be payable upon selection. Assistance also is provided by DES Game Wardens.

Golf War

Hunter Golf Club will host a Ryder Cup style challenge between Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield at 1 p.m. Oct. 6.

The most victories in shamble scramble on the front nine and scramble on the back nine will determine the 3rd ID Golf Champion and take home the traveling trophy.

Sixteen two-person teams will represent their respective courses. Interested golfers must register by Oct. 4. Entry costs $35 per player.

Golf scramble at Hunter

Registration continues until Oct. 10 for the Garrison Commander’s Golf Scramble at Hunter Golf Club. Play begins at 1 p.m. Oct. 12.

Play is limited to the first 24 four-person teams. The cost is $35 for soldiers, retiree, Army civilian and Taylors Creek or Hunter Club members. The cost is $45 for civilians.

Big buck contest

Register now to win cash for the largest buck harvested on Fort Stewart or Hunter. Registration continues until Oct. 19.

Registration costs $30 for active duty, retirees and family members, and $40 for civilians.  

All deer harvested must be turned in to the Fish & Wildlife Branch for scoring. Only two bucks can be entered, with the higher-scored buck counting. The contest runs through Dec. 31. Winners will be announced at the Wildlife Gala on Jan. 26.

Post-wide yard sale

Registration is under way for the Great DFMWR Post-Wide Housing Area Yard Sale 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 20 at Fort Stewart and Hunter.

There is no charge for post residents, but registration ensures the location of the sales is included on a map for shoppers.

The map will be available online at the FMWR website and Facebook page for download and printing.

Residents interested in participating should call the Fort Stewart Sports Office at 767-8238 or  Tominac Fitness Center 315-5078 for Hunter.

 

Wildlife photo Ccontest

Registration until Nov. 9 for the 2012 Wildlife Photo Contest for amateur photographers at Fort Stewart and Hunter.

Entries must be turned in to the Pass & Permit Office on Stewart or Hunter by Nov. 9. The competition includes a youth and adult group. The entry fees are $5 per photo (ages 4-15) and $10 per photo (adults).
