People, particularly young and impressionable children, see messages in the media, often looking to TV and movie stars for guidance on how to act as a man or a woman. Here are three strong female characters that fathers and mothers can be comfortable with their daughters emulating.

Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games trilogy

In The Hunger Games trilogy, Katniss Everdeen is a teenager faced with a terrible choice when her younger sister, Primrose, is picked as a tribute to represent their district in the upcoming Hunger Games. Katniss must choose to let her sister surely be killed in the deadly games or face her own imminent death. As any strong heroine would, Katniss chooses the latter and volunteers as a tribute in place of her sister. Young girls can learn a lot about sacrifice and sisterly love from Katniss.

Anna and Elsa, Frozen

In Frozen, Princess Elsa is a young girl burdened with a supernatural power that allows her to create and control frozen elements. When her powers accidentally cause serious injury to her sister, Anna, Elsa must keep her abilities to herself and hide from the world to ensure Annas safety. This act of selflessness comes across as indifference to the unknowing Anna. However, when Elsas powers become known to the world at large, Anna is the first to try and rescue Elsa and later is willing to sacrifice her life for the wellbeing of her sister. As with Katniss, Anna and Elsa are examples of sacrifice and sisterly love that young girls can aspire to.

Hermione Granger, Harry Potter series

In the Harry Potter series, Hermione Granger is a Muggle-born witch who is every bit as heroic as the title character. Hermione is smart and strong, as shown by her quick thinking and bravery in dangerous situations that Ron Weasley, Harry Potter, and she encounter in the eight films. Still, she has not lost her caring and nurturing side. Her loyalty to her friends is commendable and she is a straight-A student. Whats not to like for a parent?
