The second annual Susie King Taylor Symposium, Bread on the Water, will be held at 6 p.m. Feb. 5 at Historic Dorchester Academy, 8787 E Oglethorpe Highway in Midway.
The symposium is an effort to bring knowledge about the life and contributions of Susie King Taylor, a Liberty County native who escaped slavery and evolved into a Civil War freedom fighting nurse and post-war domestic and civic worker in Boston. She was also Georgia’s first federally funded school teacher, and she wrote a memoir of her experience in the Civil War.
Hermina Glass-Hill, executive director of the Susie King Taylor Women’s Institute and Ecology Center will be the guest speaker.
The free event is hosted by the Liberty County Historical Society, the Historic Dorchester Academy and the Liberty County CVB.
