Relay For Life of Richmond Hill will be “ropin’ in a cure” Friday at J.F. Gregory Park with fundraising events, like a corn on the cob eating contest, karaoke competition and a cheese puff toss, scheduled from dusk ‘til dawn.
The Relay For Life overnight event, themed “Ropin’ in a Cure,” begins at 7 p.m. Friday with and ends at 7 a.m. Saturday. Participants in the survivors’ lap and kids’ walk check in at 6:30 p.m.
“We do all night because it reflects that cancer never sleeps,” Civility Bowling, Relay For Life volunteer and event chair, said. “It’s a nationwide event and some Relay (groups) do 24-hour events, but we do 12 hours.
“We can take one night to not sleep and show our support.”
Bowling said more than 18 Relay teams, or nearly 300 participants, are signed up for the year. And she expects those numbers to grow, she said.
Friday’s event will include live entertainment and lots of activities, games and contests. And the event is family friendly – Ronald McDonald is even expected to make an appearance and help lead the kids’ walk.
“We make it to where the public can come out and enjoy, but we also make it fun for our teams that have worked so hard to make the money (for Relay For Life),” Bowling said. “And it enables the public to come out and support the cause.”
But Richmond Hill won’t be the only Relay For Life “ropin’ in a cure” until the sun comes up. Relay For Life of North Bryan will hold its nightlong festivities from 7 p.m. April 23 to 7 a.m. April 24 at Hendrix Park in Black Creek.
Victoria Ten Broeck, community manager for the American Cancer Society, said the North Bryan event will have the same activities except for the kids’ walk.
Relay For Life is a nationwide event that fundraises on behalf of the American Cancer Society that has been taking place since 1985.
The American Cancer Society, whose programs are provided at no cost, is a nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.
