The family of Evan Nelms, the 5-year-old Richmond Hill resident battling acute myeloid leukemia, is encouring people to register as bone marrow donors this week.

"Every day, thousands of patients like Evan are diagnosed with life-threatening diseases like lukemia and lymphoma," said Evan's mother, Evette Cooper. "For some of these patients, their only hope is a bone marrow transplant. Unfortunately, 70 percent of patients do not have a compatible donor in the family and have to depend on caring individuals ..."

Those wishing to register must:
- Be between 18 and 60 years old.
- Be willing to donate to any patient in need.
- Meet certain health guidelines.
- Complete a consent form.
- Give a swab of cheek cells.

Cooper noted that 75 percent of all marrow donations is similar to donating blood and does not require surgery.
