Dr. Amy Pearson of Coastal Pain Relief Specialists recently received the Rotary Club International Service Award for her volunteer work in Haiti during the earthquake aftermath.
Pearson, an anesthesiologist, spent three and a half days working with an ad hoc group of physicians performing amputations on patients who had suffered crushed limbs in the disaster.
“I had been to Haiti several times (before) … the people are just really nice, very gracious,“ she said. “The earthquake was a huge devastation. I just thought I could help out.”
Pearson will return to the island nation in October, when she will temporarily volunteer her time and abilities with a fixed medical practice.
