Kids catch summer fun at tournament

Nearly 150 children broke out their fishing poles and tackle Saturday to compete in the annual Bryan County Bass Masters Kids Fishing Tournament at J.F. Gregory Park in Richmond Hill.

Junior anglers, ages 1-15, lined the banks of the creek in hopes of reeling in the biggest catch. They were divided into four age groups, and Bass Masters provided the bait.

Many of the competitors were tournament veterans – like 9-year-old Drake Cole, who has competed in the last five tournaments.

“I just love to fish. I come here every year,” he said. “Last year, I caught 22 fish. Haven’t caught any today, though.”

Despite the week’s earlier concerns about Hurricane Irene, Saturday was clear and sunny. Afternoon temperatures reached nearly 100 degrees, but the kids didn’t seem to mind the heat.
