Kayak races set Sept. 15 for Tybee Island

The 14th annual Tybee Island Sea Kayak Races will be Sept. 15 at A-J’s Dockside, 1315 Chatham Ave. on Tybee Island.

The event will benefit the Tybee Island Marine Science Center

Events for racers include the River Race, which runs 6 ½ miles on the Back River, and the Little Tybee Challenge, which is eight miles circumnavigating part of Little Tybee Island. The Race Across the River is a short race for gold sponsors.

Races begin at 8:30 a.m. Registration is from 7:30–8:15 a.m.

Those not wanting to compete but still participate can sign up to be a casual paddler for two miles in the race.

Other activities include a drawing for a kayak plus paddle and an awards-ceremony drawing for participants after the races.

To become a sponsor, visit www.tybeekayakrace.org. Gold sponsor reps race in the Race Across the River for a grand prize of a kayak adventure with Savannah Canoe & Kayak or naturalist tour on Mike Neal's boat, Island Explorer.

This event is sanctioned by the American Canoe Association and is part of the Savannah Ocean Exchange celebration of the ocean.
