Chatham investigating West Nile case

SAVANNAH — Health officials in Chatham County are investigating a possible West Nile virus infection in a person in the Savannah area.

County health department spokeswoman Sally Silbermann said Wednesday more test results are needed to confirm whether the mosquito-borne virus made someone sick. It would be Chatham County's first West Nile case in a human since 2006.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says West Nile cases have fallen dramatically nationwide in the past decade. A total of 14 infections were reported in Georgia last year.

Chatham County health officials warned earlier this summer than tests were confirming West Nile in mosquitoes in the area.
