Cookbook review: 'Healthy Slow Cooker Revolution' is great resource for busy people

"HEALTHY SLOW COOKER REVOLUTION," America's Test Kitchen, $26.95, 318 pages

Healthy Slow Cooker Revolution is the third in a series of slow cooker recipe books by Americas Test Kitchen intended to change how cooks use this time-saving kitchen device. The first one focussed on easy slow cooker recipes in general, and the second on "easy prep." This third one hones in on healthy recipes.

Filled with low-fat, healthy recipes from main dishes to desserts, this book includes slow cooker reviews along with cooking hints for successfully creating the dishes in a home kitchen.

The book is divided into 15 parts that include recipe sections titled Slow Cooker 101, Soups, Cooking for Two, Vegetable Mains and Sides, Rice, Grains, and Beans, "Stews, Chilies, and Curries and Desserts; a preface, a two-page section of conversions and equivalencies; and an index.

Each recipe begins with a Why this recipe works paragraph and includes a short sidebar with helpful tips and information titled Smart Shopping, Quick Prep or On the side to make it easy for cooks from beginners to chefs to successfully prepare each dish. "Easy Prep and vegetarian recipes are clearly marked with color-coded tabs.

Nicely organized and easy to navigate, this cookbook is enhanced with colorful photos of finished dishes along with illustrated charts and instructions. Its definitely a go-to cookbook for busy people who want to eat healthy home cooking.

Americas Test Kitchen is located in Brookline, Massachusetts, and employs more than 36 full-time cooks and product testers. According to its website, each recipe is tested from 30 to 70 times before it is published.
