We must make sure our spiritual sides are healthy

With our physical bodies, we realize they need care. When we become dirty, we wash. If we are injured or sick, we seek medical attention to take care of the problem. We see this as a must that we stay physically healthy, but are we taking care of ourselves spiritually?

It is necessary to see the need to care for ourselves spiritually. Jesus is the great physician and supplies needed care for all in sin. “And Jesus answering said unto them, they that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Luke 5:31, 32).

Sin will cause spiritual death to come to man if something is not done to combat its effects. James wrote, “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. Do not err, my beloved brethren” (James 1:12 – 16).

The care that Jesus offers must be accepted by the “patient.” Just as we can refuse the words of a physical doctor, we can also refuse to heed the words of the great physician. God has created man in his image (Gen. 1:27) and has given man the power to choose between obeying or rejecting his creator. These points to the need for man to realize the soul needs care.

In caring for our soul, we must also avoid contamination. In caring for our physical bodies, we try and avoid situations that may cause us to become sick or injured. This same idea should be continued when we are dealing with our soul.

What would be your reaction if a couple who you are acquainted with came into your house, removed their clothes and began fornicating right in front of your family?

Most would stop this from happening, yet this same thing happens most any evening on the television sets in our homes. Our souls are being contaminated by the trash that is allowed to be broadcast on the airways.

More and more, words not becoming of a Christian are being heard coming from the mouths of “Christians.”

Again, looking at the book of James, this subject was addressed: “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be. Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh” (James 3:8 – 12). The world may accept all kinds of sinful acts as the norm, but God will not accept such.

We must take care of ourselves spiritually. Eternity is waiting.
