“It’s elementary, my dear Watson.” Sherlock Holmes made this line famous as he always solved the crime, just in the nick of time.
In the old TV show “Perry Mason,” the renowned defense attorney always managed to get the true murderer to confess just before the final commercial break. Even the corny Batman show brought the arch-criminals to justice in the final moments of the show. Justice always was served in the end.
That’s not always the case in the movies or TV shows today, and it is not always the case in real life, either. Our justice system works well the majority of the time, but we all know that some people have literally gotten away with murder. And it is most unfortunate that some innocent persons have been convicted and have served significant jail time. We regret both of those things.
But why does this matter so much to us? Why do we long for justice? The first reality is that we understand that there really is such a thing as right and wrong. We may not always be able to discern which is which, but we know that these categories exist. And we want to see the wrong punished in the end. No matter what certain philosophers might declare, right and wrong are categories of reality.
That leads me to the second idea. Knowing that the categories of right and wrong exist, we want to see justice served. We are discouraged when someone gets away with a crime, especially if we are the victims. We want to see criminals pay for their crimes, and we want to see the innocent go free. That does not always happen, and that bothers us.
That leads me to this conclusion. If our hearts cry out for justice, that desire is there for a reason. God placed it there. That leads me to conclude that he has every intention of setting things right. People will pay for their sins in the end. Most people agree with me on that.  Where we differ is in the definition of sin. Many think of only the most heinous crimes as sinful.
But the Bible says, “All have sinned…” That includes all of us.  The Bible also says, “The wages of sin is death…” That certainly is not good news. But the good news is found in this verse. “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” So these verses, all found in Paul’s letter to the Romans, show us that sin is real, it is a problem, and that God has provided a solution for it. It remains for us to accept that solution.
The Bible also says, “It is appointed to man to die, and after that is the judgment.” The question we all must ask: Am I ready to meet my maker?
