The causes of salvation, part 5

Over the past few weeks we have been looking at the "Causes of Salvation." We have noticed that God the Father, Christ the Son, the Holy Spirit, the word of God and faith all are causes of our salvation. Today we will notice another "cause of salvation."

The consummating cause of our salvation is obedience. This should not come as a surprise to any student of the Bible. From the beginning of time, God has asked for man’s obedience.

In the Garden of Eden, Adam and Eve were told, "Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die" (Gen. 2:16, 17). When man disobeyed God, he was driven from the garden, "Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life (Gen. 3:23, 24).

As you study the history of God’s people it is found that God gave a written law to man through Moses. "For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ" (John 1:17). This law was given because of the sins of the people. "Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator" (Gal. 3:19).

Now living in the Christian age, we too are to be obedient. In this age we are to be obedient to the Law of Christ. Christ is the one through whom God speaks to man today, in the New Testament. "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds" (Heb. 1:1, 2). Jesus Himself said that man is to accept His teachings, "He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day" (John 12:48).

In the revelation letter, John by inspirations states, "Blessed are they that do his commandments that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city" (Rev. 22:14).

The causes of our salvation are; God the Father, Christ the Son, the Holy Spirit, the word of God, faith and obedience. God sent His Son to die on the cross for the sins of mankind. The Holy Spirit directed 40 men over a period of 1500 years to write down the things God wants man to know. That word produces faith and that leads man to obey the gospel of Christ.

Believe in Christ, repent of your sins, confess Jesus is the Christ, be baptized to have your sins washed away and live a faithful life for God. You can have the salvation of your soul.
