The West Savannah Area Women’s Missionary Society will sponsor its third annual scholarship/mission golf tournament Oct. 5 at the Cherokee Country Club in Hinesville.  Check-in starts at noon, with tee time at 1 p.m. The WMS members are asking you to be a part of this fun-filled day.
Lois A. Shields of the Greater Gaines Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Savannah is the chairperson, and Josephine Edwards of Pleasant Grove AME in Hinesville is first vice chairperson and tournament chairperson.
“The Women’s Missionary Society is an organization comprised of women of the AME worldwide. Since the organization is so huge, it is broken down by districts, conferences and areas,” Edwards said.
“The West Savannah Area WMS includes Liberty, Long, Chatham, parts of McIntosh, Bulloch, Bryan and Wayne counties. We are a part of the Georgia Conference in the Sixth Episcopal District, which covers all AME churches in the state of Georgia,” she added.
Edwards said the tournament supports the WMS scholarship and various mission projects that the organization assists with in the community. Projects include providing help for the homeless, hot meals for the needy, workshops, educational scholarships/materials, providing support for shelters and more.
“This annual event also provides the WMS the chance to be a support system for our local communities, the underserved and the underprivileged,” she said.
Edwards said she does not play golf but is happy to be a part of such an event that is focused on helping to make things better for others.
“This is our third annual tournament, and we are excited and looking forward to this event. Teams can register and individuals can come out and get paired up with a team. Registration will be open up until the day of the tournament,” she said.
Last year, she said, the tourney raised enough money to award one recipient with a $1,000 scholarship. Edwards said the goal for this year is to award at least three $1,000 scholarships and assist the recipients with purchasing their books. Tiera Jackson, a member the Greater Gaines Chapel AME Church, was the scholarship recipient last year. She is a student at Savannah State University.
