Many of you know that I like to pray while I am walking. Since I live way out in the country, I can walk with very little contact with traffic.
As a side note, I do try to either walk on the other side of the road when vehicles are approaching and if they are coming from both directions I get out of the road. My father used to tell me when I rode my bike on the road as a child that if he ever caught me not getting completely off of the road when a vehicle approached I would lose my privilege of riding it.
Well, back to the praying. To keep myself a little organized as I pray, I use the Lord’s Prayer as a model. I first give the Lord praise for who he is and what He has done, for the prayer says, “Our Father hollowed be your name.”
I then I pray for those that I believe need to accept Christ as the forgiver of their sins, for the scripture says, “Let your kingdom come.”
I then pray for God’s will to be done in my life, my family’s lives, my church’s ministries and even in the elections that are upon us. The prayer literally says, “Let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
When the prayer tells us to “Give us today our daily bread”, I pray for God to continue to meet my family’s needs but also the physical and material needs of those that I know are hurting or struggling.
Then comes the part of the prayer that takes a bit of humility to pray for; it says, “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.” I ask the Lord to forgive me for not being the husband, father, grandfather, pastor, Christian and citizen that I need to be.
I then go on to ask forgiveness for our nation and it’s leaders. The prayer finishes up by asking the Father for deliverance from the temptations from Satan as he is trying to discourage us and lead us astray. I finish by praying for things that come to my mind and end with “In Christ’s name I pray”.
You don’t have to pray using this model, but it sure works for me. The key is not where we pray but that we pray, and remember there are those who are depending on your prayers.
