Many people have things that they are going to “get around to.”
A trip is one thing many people say this about. They hear of a place or see something that makes them want to go there, but they can’t go right now. However, one day they will “get around to it.” Years pass, and they finally realize they waited too long.
Many say, “One of these days, I am going to look into religion and get my life on the right track.” They think they are too busy to bother with such things today and there is plenty of time later for that — or so they think.
The sincerity of these people should not be in doubt, for they do mean to look into these things. The thing is life is too short to put off learning more about God and obeying him.
We all should remember that life is but for a little while. James wrote, “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14). Ask someone who is older, and they will tell you that life gets away from you before you know it. The years have a way of passing faster than we want.
Putting off reading and following God’s word is never good. Many older people have regretted not turning to God earlier in their life. Wasted years they call them, years when, if they had followed God, they could have made differences in so many people’s lives. Sometimes, it is their own family that they should have influenced, but they just never got “around to it.”
The time to start is today, not tomorrow. Pick up a copy of the Bible and start learning about God’s love for you. Some find it hard to believe that God would be concerned about them, but he is. He cares for everything and everybody. In what is known as the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus discussed how God takes care of the birds of the air; they do not sow nor reap, but they are fed, and then he asked, “Are ye not much better than they” (Matthew 6:25-30)?
Learn about the church that Christ built and for which he died. “And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matthew 16:18), “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood” (Acts 20:28).
Learn how God wants you to prepare for the end of this short life. His desire is that all should be saved. He allowed man to crucify his son, this was in his plan for our salvation (Acts 2:23). The Bible gives us examples of how people in the first century obeyed the Gospel and were saved. It also tells man that he must remain faithful to God, no matter what (1 Corinthians 15: 1-4, Revelation 2:10).
You might still say you’ll get around to it, but remember that one day this life will be over and there will be no more tomorrows. As the Hebrew writer said, “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27). Make your start today.
