Its called the Golden Rule, or, as Debbie Bosak of The Chicago Tribune puts it, treating others as you would want to be treated.
Bosak spoke to parents earlier this year who said that children grow up as morally good when they learn the Golden Rule from a young age, according to the Tribune.
Children need to be taught, right from the start, how to make good choices, especially when it comes to sex, drugs, alcohol, the friends they choose and the consequences of bad decisions, Maggie Schroeder, a parent from Highland Park, Illinois, told Bosak. Situations from the nightly news can provide a good jumping off point for many discussions with both children and teens.
The Golden Rule has been around for thousands of years, according to Izzy Kalman of Psychology Today. Aristotle even promoted the Golden Rule about 2,400 years ago, saying that it would bring peace to the world that would lessen the need for government and human authority.
It's obvious that if people lived by the Golden Rule life would be terrific, Kalman wrote. Relationships would be ideal. Bullying would cease to be a problem. If the entire world lived by the Golden Rule, there would be peace on Earth. It's also obvious that it's impossible to be living ethically if we are violating the GR.
